Saying no.

Selectivity is why the numbers on our record are real — we only take problems we can move.

Jan 2026 — 6 min

Roughly half of our first conversations end with us recommending against an engagement. Sometimes the timing is wrong; sometimes the problem is operational, not strategic; sometimes the founder needs a different firm entirely.

What a first conversation is actually for

Prospects arrive assuming the meeting is a pitch. It is a diagnosis. The only question that matters in the first hour is whether the problem in front of us is one that strategic work can genuinely move — and whether it can be moved now, with this team, at this stage.

When the honest answer is no, saying so is not a courtesy. It is the product working correctly.

The three most common reasons we decline

Timing is the first. A positioning engagement before product-market fit produces beautiful language about a company that does not exist yet.

Category of problem is the second. If churn is coming from onboarding, or growth is blocked by a broken sales handoff, that is operational work — and hiring strategists to do it is expensive procrastination.

Fit is the third. Some founders need a firm that will execute alongside them for a year; that is a different service, and pretending otherwise serves no one.

Why selectivity is the business model

This is not modesty — it is how the record stays real. Every number we publish comes from engagements we believed we could move. A track record padded with engagements taken for revenue would be a bigger number describing a smaller truth.

Selectivity is the discipline that makes the track record mean something. It is also, not incidentally, why the conversations that do become engagements start with trust already in the room.
